Giving Back with the Net Prophet Bursary

Don't forget that Net Prophet is about giving back. It's about inspiring and you too can play your part by donating to our bursary and helping someone less privileged attend South Africa's leading university. Since its inception the Net Prophet bursary has funded 5 students with your help. For every R30 000 we raise, one student gets a year's tuition covered. Lets see if we can help another three students this year.

Crowd funding a bursary is tough unless you have some clever tech to facilitate the payments and make it easy. The guys from Payfast have come to the party this year and put together an easy donation page, take a look here

Yusuf Randera Rees – Entrepreneurship South Africa Style

Yusuf Randera Rees is an inspirational young Entrepreneur with an amazing academic background – he attended Harvard and Oxford where he founded an AIDS charity endorsed by the Gates Foundation. Yusuf is passionate about the entrepreneurial power in the under resourced communities of South Africa, which is why he founded the Awethu Project – a project that tests and upskills young uneducated South Africans with untapped cognative ability.
In his presentation Yusuf shared his background, his motivations and his journey to set up the Awethu Project, as well as the difficulties and successes he has had since the project was founded.

Rich Mulholland – Avatar Activism

We were lucky enough to have Rich join us on stage twice during Net Prophet 2012 – his second full length presentation looked at Avatar Activism – and how social media makes people jump causes and how Avatar Activism is a shallow and ingenuine way to show your support for a cause! He also coined a new #tag – BAAA – ‘bad asses against avatar activism’ – his presentation is honest, refreshing and not to be missed.

For the second 3 minute power presentation slot of the day – we had some more familiar faces take the stage with Walter Pike – from Pike Digital Marketing, Wesley Lynch from Realm Digital and Don Packett from 21 Tanks. Richard Hardiman – Internet Radio in South Africa and why it shouldn’t work.

We all know and love Richard Hardiman, he was the voice of drive time radio on 94.5kfm for many years – however Richard felt constricted and confined by the world of analouge radio and after 15 years in with one foot in the world of the internet gambling industry and the other in the world of mainstream radio, Richard attempted to make his life uncomfortable. Betting on Online Radio as a new content platform in SA, Richard got behind 2OV.fm, partnering with the author of “the vibe”, Seth Rotherham founder award-winning blog-turn-news site, 2OceansVibe.com

In his presentation Richard focused on the limitations of an online only radio platform in SA – and his journey and story since taking a leap of faith from analogue to digital radio.

Jeremy Loops and Motheo Mokeko

Jeremy Loops is a modern one-man folk band. Through necessity he has embraced a plethora of instruments allowing him to create a dynamic sound, using beat boxing, ukulele, harmonica, and guitar to name a few. All these are plugged through a range of pedals that leaves the crowd literally jumping from the good vibrations. Jeremy’s main lyricist, M.O.Lecko, adds the perfect pop to bolster this new folk-funk feat. Crowd participation and collaboration is a huge part of making this performance brew with singular awesomeness. In their presentation they spoke about the metaphors of music in a digital age and how they use the internet and technology to enhance their music and performances.

Christo Davel: Obsession isn’t always a bad thing

Christo Davel is innovator in the online banking sector in South Africa – he was behind the first ever online insurance during his time at Old Mutual, he also founded the first ever online bank in SA called twenty20 – which grew to 40,000 users within 6 months. Christo has a strong belief in the power of a good team, and in being obsessed with your product or brand – two qualities that led to Christo and his team at 22seven to build South Africa’s premier online money management platform.
During his presentation at Net Prophet – Christo shared his personal journey towards 20twenty and 22seven, and illustrated how obsession isn’t always a bad thing and surrounding yourself with the best possible staff is invaluable.

Sylvia Gruber: Seven Startup Sins

Sylvia is a highly entrepreneurial woman, educated in Europe, who then went on to manage beauty giants such as P&G in Frankfurt, Germany and L’Oréal in Paris, France where she honed her brand building, development and strategy skills. She moved to SA in 2009 and it was here that she was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and thus began her self-taught journey into the digital world. Sylvia founded Beauty subscription business, Rubybox – where women from all over South Africa subscribe to receive trial size beauty products. Rubybox has grown rapidly and now the company has over 4000 monthly subscribers.

In her presentation at Net Prophet, Sylvia spoke about the lessons she has learned as a young startup – and the sins to avoid in the first few years of business.

Dan Bowyer: 604 Ought to be enough

Dan Bowyer is one man, many tricks, after being a popstar, an air stewardess, working for Virgin Atlantic at their IT training centre, being a property developer, and founding a successful IT consulting company in London, Dan is in Cape Town looking for his next venture. He has a sound interest in Clean Tech, and sustainable housing initiatives.
Dan reflected on the state of the tech industry, and gave his forecasts of the future of tech in Africa.

Chris Rolfe: Rewarding the right behavior in a mobile world

Chris Rolfe is from Mobilitrix: who specialise in mobile content marketing, rewards and couponing – Chris has a wealth of digital experience from his time here, plus his past as CEO of Virgin Active South Africa. Before this Chris was the Commercial Director of Sportal Limited, a London-based new media company, and as Head of Business Development for Kerzner Interactive, also based in London.

Permjot is a real ambassador for everything Net Prophet is about – he loves to impart his knowledge and wisdom of the startup scene and literally flies all around the world sharing his lessons and journey. Permjot has run our widely regarded Startup Acceleration Workshop for the past 2 years. Before this Permjot founded Help with Sales Ltd, and has invested in over 25 different companies all over the world. Prior to his journey into the world of being an active angel investor, Permjot was Marketing and Sales Director of Entrepreneurial Services, at Ernst and Young, London.

Rich Mulholland – The Power of the 3 Minute Message.

For Net Prophet veterans, Rich Mulholland needs no introduction. For those of you who are newer to our conference, Rich Mulholland is a crazy intelligent, tattoo clad, motorbike riding Scotsman who founded the hugely successful Presentation Strategy company Missing Link as well as 21 Tanks – an inspiration thinktank.

Rich is irreverent, a little politically incorrect, but massively bright and thought provoking. In his first of 2 speaking sessions on the day – Rich took us though the power of the 3 minute message and gave us context for what was to come in the rest of the day.

Robyn Scott – The Power of Asymmetric Connections.

Robyn comes from an unconventional Botswanian background - where she found the inspiration for her book, Twenty Chickens for a Saddle – after the success of the book, Robyn had the capital and the idea for her next venture and founded One Leap – a company based on the power of ‘Asymmetric Connections’ and bringing people together across a social platform with a twist.

In her presentation, Robyn touches on the idea of how powerful asymmetric connections can be for creatives and business – and how her outsider status when growing up encouraged her to build a platform to make connections easier for people just like her.

Net Prophet 3 Minute Power Slot – Winner Announcement

In an effort to introduce some new faces to the Net Prophet line-up, we came up with the concept of the 3 minute power presentation to demonstrate that there are plenty of inspirational & under-exposed speaking heroes in SA – and we took the risk to give them a stage, a mic and one big opportunity! After an application process and careful scrutinisation of all of the applicants – we selected an amazing group of people to take part on the day – and we think they all absolutely rocked it.

After tracking audience participation & listening to the panel of judges battle it out – a winner has emerged. This was no easy decision, as each and every speaker brought their own spice to the event. However- we do need a winner, and that winner is: Don Packett - Don will be awarded with 40 hours of presentation mentoring by Missing Link and will have a full 20 minute speaking slot at Net Prophet next year.

Don’s content, style and execution gave him the edge eventually – big congrats to him! We’ll run another session of 3 minute slots next year – and another winner will rise!

We’re really pleased to announce our key note speaker for Net Prophet – our first female key note speaker ever!

Robyn Scott is Managing Director and Co-Founder of OneLeap.

Robyn is also Co-Founder of Mothers for All, Botswana’s only grassroots national non-profit, now also operating in South Africa. Backed by Barclays Bank and the EU and featured in Oprah’s magazine, Mothers for All teaches entrepreneurship skills to AIDS orphan caregivers.Her critically acclaimed first book, Twenty Chickens for a Saddle, is a memoir about growing up in Botswana against the AIDS epidemic. She is currently writing her second book, Big Like Coca-Cola, the true story of a group of maximum security prisoners in South Africa’s most violent prison who adopted AIDS orphans.

She is an Ambassador for the Access to Medicine Index, a Global Ambassador for Sandbox Network. She is an adviser to several international development charities and social enterprises and a mentor at Skoll’s Emerge Social Venture Lab. She has worked for BP, the Financial Times and Investec Bank. She has a BSc Bioinformatics from Auckland University and an MPhil Bioscience Enterprise Distinction from Cambridge University.

She is a fellow of the RSA and a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader.

Are you a red hot SA based startup? If you are, you don’t want to miss this – we’re offering tech startups the opportunity to receive two days of 100% FREE, hands-on mentoring and coaching with Permjot Valia, – one of Europe’s top startup mentors. We’re now in our second year of the acceleration workshop – and last year, our startups found the experience invaluable!

This is an amazing opportunity for those who need some help getting their awesome ideas to market.

The main focus of the workshop will be to help local startups to fast-track their businesses towards commercial success, and compete in the international arena.

To ensure that each startup receives the maximum value from the experience, space is limited to just ten startups. Interested parties that would like to attend the workshop must apply via our website.

All applications will be screened by us to determine which startups are most suitable to attend. The final startups selected to participate will be chosen by us. Applications close on 25 April. The selected candidates will be announced on April 26.

Christo Davel – Obsession isn’t always a bad thing.

Christo Davel is innovator in the online banking sector in South Africa – he was behind the first ever online insurance company during his time at Old Mutual, he also founded the first ever online bank in SA called twenty20 – which grew to 40,000 users within 6 months. Christo has a strong belief in the power of a good team, and in being obsessed with your product or brand – two qualities that led to Christo and his team at 22seven to build South Africa’s premier online money management platform.

During his presentation at Net Prophet – Christo shared his personal journey towards 20twenty and 22seven, and illustrated how obsession isn’t always a bad thing and surrounding yourself with the best possible staff is invaluable.

Sylvia Gruber – Seven Startup Sins.

In her presentation at Net Prophet, Sylvia spoke about the lessons she has learned as a young startup – and the sins to avoid in the first few years of business.

D-Day: 8 May

After a hugely successful conference in 2011, we are very excited to announce the date of our fourth annual Net Prophet conference – we’ll be hosting the event at the Mutual Park in Pinelands, Cape Town on the 8th of May. Go on – add it to your calendar, this event is a must! We suggest that you follow us on twitter or sign up for our newsletter to receive updates as they happen.

For those who are already a part of the online industry or for those who have a passion to learn more about all things internet – this is event for you! The conference will be a forum intended for the sharing of ideas, creativity, trends and forecasts from opinion leaders and innovators who shape this massively interesting and evolving industry.

The vision of the conference is to provide young and emerging entrepreneurs with information and insight into the industry, from leaders of the online industry themselves – the conference is also 100% free of charge to attend; all you need to do is register ahead of time.
